Character Profiles
Dustin Pedroia is a static and flat character. He remains the same throughout the whole book. He is an athletic, hardworking man. He has always given a hundred percent in everything he does, “I was going to play as hard as I could in anything. I gave 100 percent in everything I did, even in school. Even in PE class.” (19). Dustin is a dedicated baseball player and never gets tired of it. As a child he would always play catch in the house and would always have a baseball in his hand. When he was only thirteen years old, he played with his brother’s college team because they were short one player. No one thought he would be able to handle college ball, but he did better than some of the college players. Dustin Pedroia is a great athlete and practiced hard every day to get to the major leagues.
Guy Pedroia is a static and flat character. He is a quiet, athletic, talented man. He owns three tire shops with his wife, Debbie Pedroia, in California. He started working at the tire shop when he was fifteen. When he got old enough, he bought the tire shop from the original owner and called it his own. In college he played baseball and was excellent at it. He loves coaching kids because he loves seeing the look on their faces when they get really good in the sport. He loves watching Dustin play and helped him when he was a child, “My dad used to work with Brett and me. One of his rules was that I had to take as many ground balls as swings.” (14). Dustin and his father have a good relationship and they watch baseball games together all the time.
Debbie Pedroia is also a static and flat character. She is very competitive, athletic and supportive of her son. She is the co-owner of three tire shops in California. When Dustin was in college she had to work fifteen hours a day to play for his college education. In college she was an excellent tennis player. “My mother played tennis at Sacramento City College.” (12).She was very good at tennis until she got in a car accident and broke her legs and fractured her back. This was the end of her athletic career. Although her athletic career ended, she was very supportive of Dustin’s career. She would go to all of his games and cheer him on. She loved watching him play because he was really good at it.
